The deficit in expertise to identify hidden disabilities such as dyslexia in order to provide appropriate support within education is a serious obstacle to children and young people with SEN. For example, their life outcomes can be severely restricted in terms of employment.
“... approximately two million children and young people in England who are identified as having a special educational need (SEN), or who are disabled, are disproportionately poor.” (Department for Education 2011)
The Green Paper Consultation Document: ‘Support and Aspiration: A New approach to Special Educational Needs and Disability’ 2011 proposes a radically different system which is a significant opportunity to place disabled children and their families in the centre of a multi-agency approach to assessment and delivery of services.
